

Benjamin and Clark's crew spent a number of months in the city Murmansk, Russia, where Benjamin would eventually meet Elizabeth Abbott, the wife of the British Trade Minister. Over the next five years, Benjamin physically ages backwards, becoming taller and stronger physically, something Captain Clark is amazed by, but Benjamin explains it away by him drinking too much. Then in 1939, Benjamin and his crew began their involvement in World War II. In 1935, a 17 year old Benjamin leaves home and works out to sea with the captain and his crew. His commitment to earning some pay impresses Clark, and he takes Benjamin to a brothel in the city, where Benjamin supposedly loses his virginity. Benjamin soon comes into the service of captain Mike Clark, working aboard his tugboat, doing the most menial of jobs such as mopping and scrubbing the decks. In 1930, Benjamin meets the six year old- Daisy Fuller, and the two become good friends. To Queenie and everyone elses disbelief, Benjamin survives the next seven years of his life, finally standing and walking for the first time at a church service, where the minister dies of a heart attack. Queenie then decided to raise Benjamin in the nursing home, believing he would not live for very long. When his father Thomas Button discovered this he was terrified, quickly taking the newborn and leaving him on the front porch of a nursing home, where he was discovered by Queenie and Mr. However his mother died giving birth to him and he was born with the physical appearance and afflictions of an elderly man.
